About GIMSPP
General Internal Medicine Statewide Preceptorship Program (GIMSPP)
Connecting Tomorrow’s Physicians with Today’s Internal Medicine Physicians
The General Internal Medicine Statewide Preceptorship Program (GIMSPP) gives first- and second-year Texas medical students a unique opportunity to experience real-world internal medicine—side by side with practicing internal medicine physicians across the state.
What is GIMSPP?
GIMSPP is a 2-4-week summer preceptorship that places medical students in the offices of internal medicine physicians who volunteer to mentor the next generation of doctors. Students gain invaluable hands-on clinical exposure and insight into the daily life of an internist.
Why It Matters
Texas is experiencing a significant shortage of primary care physicians. Through GIMSPP, experienced physicians introduce and mentor medical students in the field of primary care early on in their medical careers. Preceptors have the chance to directly impact the next generation and the vital field of internal medicine. Students have the opportunity to experience internal medicine first-hand:
- Engage in immersive, real-world work alongside experienced physicians
- Build professional connections and expand your network in the healthcare field
- Acquire and refine new clinical skills that will advance your career
- Opportunities for stipends available to support your involvement
